The work for this show compared the idea of weight, from the past to now. It focused on the fitness world and both tangible weight versus balancing the weight of life, femininity, and motherhood. The heaviness of perfection and the loft of perception volley through colorful glitter and sequins and whimsical wooden sculpture.
The pieces highlighted the candy-coated diet industry that, underneath, was dark and toxic. Retro VHS tapes and icons were transformed into shimmering reflections of nostalgia and cultural memory. Vintage tennis rackets were woven with the familiar blank tapes designs of the past. All pieces help illuminate the light and floaty but still manic energy the wellness industry has.
As women we are often expected to be light yet grounded. This show speaks to how we have learned to balance longevity, responsibilities, and growth into one mere bikeshorted body.
